What to do in Pattaya in two days?

Pattaya has a reputation that says nothing about what you can do there in two days. With a little planning you get a quiet beach, an unexpected monument and an island — without spending your days in traffic.

Day 1, morning: Jomtien

Start at Jomtien beach, to the south, calmer than the central bay. The sand is wide, the vendors less insistent, and you can walk a long way by the water. Arrive early: from midday the heat becomes serious.

Day 1, afternoon: the Sanctuary of Truth

This temple, entirely in carved wood, is best visited in late afternoon when light falls across the facades. It is the region’s most surprising monument, and the only one that justifies the trip on its own.

Day 1, evening: the night market

Pattaya has several night markets. Pick one rather than running between them: the point is to eat on the spot, in small portions, watching the others work.

Day 2: Koh Larn

The ferry leaves from the Bali Hai pier and reaches the island in about forty minutes. Rent a scooter or take a shuttle to the beaches on the far side, which are clearer. Leave before late afternoon to avoid the crush on the way back.

Practical information

Blue songthaews run along Beach Road for a few baht; just wave them down. Avoid renting a car: traffic is dense and parking rare. The dry season, November to February, is by far the most pleasant.
