What to do in Hua Hin with children?

Hua Hin is the historic seaside town of the Thai royal family, three hours from Bangkok. It has kept a quieter atmosphere than Pattaya or Phuket, which makes it comfortable with children.

The beach

Several kilometres long, lined with restaurants and hotels. Fine sand, gentle slope, shallow water over much of it: reassuring with small children. In late afternoon Thai families picnic and play ball.

Water parks

Slides, wave pools and children’s areas: the most popular activity when it is hot. Allow a full day.

Markets

The central night market offers food, clothes and souvenirs: lively, family-friendly, with skewers and ice cream for children.

Temples

Khao Takiab, on the hill south of town, offers a bay view and hosts monkeys. Beware: they are used to tourists and can be insistent. Another temple west of town is an important pilgrimage site.

The station

One of Thailand’s most photographed, with its architecture and old carriages. A short, free visit children enjoy.

The reconstructed village

Old houses rebuilt with shops and restaurants, showing life of the past. Touristy but pleasant with children.

Excursions

Boat trips, horse rides on the beach and plantation visits. Check safety and supervision before booking.

Animals

Elephant sanctuaries and care centres. Choose structures with no rides and no shows, which explain how they work.

Climate

Relatively dry, with less rain than other regions. The cool season, November to February, is most pleasant.

Getting around

Compact: on foot in the centre, otherwise tuk-tuk, taxi or apps. Scooter rental is risky with children. A car with driver is practical for excursions.

Where to stay

Family hotels line the beach and the centre. The south, towards Khao Takiab, is calmer and better suited to families.
