Where to stay on Koh Samet?

Where to stay on Koh Samet?

Koh Samet is the closest island to Bangkok: three to four hours by road and a short boat crossing. It is also a national park, which limits construction and gives the island a particular character.

Accommodation matters more here than elsewhere, because beaches have very different atmospheres and getting around is not always simple.

Understanding the island

Koh Samet is small: you can go round it in a day. Beaches follow the east coast, while the west is wilder and rockier. Most accommodation is on the east, busier in the south, calmer in the north.

Sai Kaew

The main beach, busiest, with restaurants, bars and varied accommodation. Also the loudest in the evening. Simplest choice for a short stay.

Ao Wong Duean

A long curved beach, calmer than Sai Kaew, with bungalows and restaurants. A good balance.

Ao Prao

On the west coast, known for calm and sunsets. More upmarket and isolated. The choice of couples and silence-seekers.

Other beaches

Smaller beaches such as Ao Tubtim or Ao Nuan offer simple bungalows and a family atmosphere. Less accessible, which guarantees calm.

Types of accommodation

Simple bungalows, guesthouses, hotels and resorts. Prices vary widely by season and proximity to the beach.

Prices

Moderate in low season; sharply higher in high season and at weekends, especially seafront.

Booking

Online platforms work, but many places take direct bookings. Compare prices and check the real location on a map: a ‘sea view’ can be far from the beach.

Access

From Bangkok, reach Ban Phe by bus or car, then the island by ferry or speedboat. Arrival is often at Sai Kaew or the main pier. Plan the transfer to your accommodation: some beaches need a boat taxi.

The national park

The island is a national park: entry is charged and construction limited. Park rules apply: no wild camping, no fires.

On the island

Getting around is on foot, by motorbike taxi or boat taxi. There are no cars. Bring cash: ATMs are rare.
